🏖️ School's Out for Summer & Ep. 150 (!!!) 🎉

Summer Reading Club + Episode 150 Celebration + Upcoming Events

Hi Reader,

I know school is out for many of your kids—unless you're here in San Diego, where we still have two weeks to go! I have such fond memories of summers stretching endlessly ahead, filled with warm weather, pool days, and—of course—books.

Books were my escape and constant companion, especially during college and grad school. I was that student—happily picking up a leisure read over the coursework I was supposed to be studying (oops!). I quickly learned to save my 'fun' reading for summer breaks, and those stories felt like such a reward.

Now, I try to make reading that same special gift for my own kids. Even though they can read year-round, we treat summer reading as an adventure. I put together some of our favorite ways to keep reading fun during these sunny months, including summer reading challenges, road trip audiobook picks, and more!

🏖️ Summer Reading Fun 🏖️

📖 Join a Summer Reading Challenge
Your local library likely has a summer reading program full of incentives, book-themed events, and prizes. It's a great way to build excitement and get involved with your local community.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Start a Book Club
You know I’m a huge fan of book clubs—and they’re not just for grown-ups! You can start one with friends or with your kids. At our house, we pick a book to read together—whether it’s at bedtime or over breakfast—and treat it like a mini book club. Add some snacks, silly discussion questions, and maybe even let the kids “host” a meeting to keep things playful and fun. It’s a great way to connect, encourage thoughtful conversation, and make reading feel like a shared adventure.

🎧 Audiobooks

I often hear people say they don’t like audiobooks—but I always encourage them to try again with a different genre or adjust the playback speed. Sometimes, it just takes finding the right fit! In my experience, light, easy-to-follow stories work best for listening, especially when you’re multitasking or on the go.

We recently added a Yoto player to our home, and it’s been a game-changer for the kids. You can purchase story cards they can pop in themselves, plus there are kid-friendly podcasts and music, too. It’s made audiobooks easy, independent, and super accessible.
